Fees used and where they come from

How the Upwork fee works

fee = rate × service fee %, net = rate − fee

You see the percentage before you commit: on the offer a client sends, and on the proposal you submit. Once the contract starts the rate is locked. The fee is rounded to the cent, so on 12 hours at $22.22 with a 10% fee Upwork takes $26.66 and you net $239.98. Refunds return the fee on the refunded amount. Direct Contracts, Any Hire and Payroll contracts are charged differently.

Upwork also charges per withdrawal. Its help pages only say “a small fee” for PayPal and Payoneer and show the amount inside your account settings, so those are marked unverified here; type yours under “Payout fees”. Direct to U.S. Bank (which is how Wise USD account details are paid) is free with a US tax address and $2.99 from 1 September 2026 for everyone else.
